Obituary for Mary Ellen (Humphrey) Cox

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Mary Ellen Cox, who left us peacefully on Friday March 8, 2024. A cherished resident of Auburn, MA, for the last 46 years, Mary Ellen carried her roots from West Tatnuck throughout her life, embodying the values and strength instilled in her from her early days.

Born to George and Mary (Lawless) Humphrey, Mary Ellen pursued her passion for service and community through a distinguished career in real estate, where she was a successful Realtor since 1985 and a proud member of the multi-million dollar club. Her dedication to her profession was paralleled by her commitment to her community, having started her career at the Worcester Area Chamber of Commerce and the Office of Planning and Development for the City of Worcester.

Faith played a pivotal role in Mary Ellen's life. From her beginnings at Christ the King Church in Worcester, active involvement in St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Auburn, to her later years at the Church of the Reconciliation in Webster.

Mary Ellen was predeceased by her beloved husband of 32 years, David, with whom she shared an adventurous spirit, traveling across 48 states by plane and by Stag, making lasting memories along the way.

Mary Ellen leaves behind a loving family: her son Michael and wife Kristen; stepdaughters Aileen, Vickie and her husband Pete; her brother George and wife Kathleen and her brother Charles; grandchildren Fiona, Ian, Drew and Alison; and nieces and nephews who were deeply loved: Amy, her husband Jon and children Chris and Matty; Jennifer, who predeceased her, and Jennifer’s daughter Catherine; and Elysia.

Known for her gracious hospitality, Mary Ellen's home was a haven of warmth and welcome, reflecting her belief in the power of connection and the joy of sharing.

Her love of smiley faces (the Worcester one!) encapsulates her legacy of kindness, community service, and joy that will continue to inspire those who knew her. Mary Ellen's memory will forever be a guiding light, reminding us of the impact one life can have on many.

Family and friends are invited to a visiting hour on Wednesday, March 13th from 10:00-11:00am at Britton Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St in Auburn. A funeral service will follow the calling hour at the funeral home. Burial will take place next door at Hillside Cemetery.
